- Retrospective
We went downstairs for breakfast, we knew the menu because it was the same for last nights dinner too. The place was fine, a little rough but fine. Thankfully breakfast was better then the breakfast I had for dinner, because that was the only non meat thing on the menu. This was the third place we’ve gone to where they had pizza, but only with meat toppings. Pre-made and frozen, reheated to order. So even if they were willing to take the meat off, which I got the impression they weren’t, I don’t know that they could have. But like I said thankfully breakfast for breakfast was better. I think the grill was just cleaner but I’m gonna choose not the think about that too long.
After we were ready and checked out Jerry went outside to make sure the last the road goo was off his tire. He got something that looked like tar on his rear wheel in the construction zone. The goo itself isn’t so bad but then you pick up any and every thing in the road. This could just be an annoying click, click, click as your wheel spins or you could pick up something that might be stuck for a spin and then give you a flat soon after that.
Anyway I took the opportunity to ask a local about the road to Rugby. The hotel manager asked the waitress, who asked the customer, who asked his buddy, who yelled GOOGLE IT. Unhelpful but at least it gave me a laugh. I really did need to know anything, Route 2 for basically 80 miles, what could be the real conversation? How ever I thought I might get some kind of insight… I did, just not about the road.
The local news said the next town “Devil’s Lake” (pretty metal name!) was 51 degrees, we were dressed for the cold. However, as soon as we stepped outside it felt much warmer than that. So before we even left we were stripping down layers.
The road was nice enough but a very one lane kind of a day. As I rode behind Jerry my mind drifted up and down with the rolling hills. It was a very quite day but it was nice.
Early on in the day I got a text, or rather on our first break I saw I had a text that the guy who’s name I through in the hat got the job. I didn’t have much to do with it but I was involved enough to be happy to know something positive happened. It makes me happy to know good things can go to good people, especially when I can help. However it was kind of sobering to think about work. I will have to go make money eventually. Really sooner then later the way this has been going. I was really freaking out in the beginning, but that might have just been nerves manifesting toward finical worry. It has been nice that I have been kind of liberated from that worry. Not that I am completely liberated or completely back to worry, but I did re-touch base with those thoughts. I have been listening to Jerry talk about what he did to prepare and what his thoughts and worries were about not working again, it has all been a nice change of pace. However this is just a vacation for me.
We rode past Devil’s Lake. It did not look as metal as I had kind of hoped it might. There was a town where we stopped for some supplies, then right back on the road.
More of the same, some bends and hills but nothing really of any note. Single lane, thinking in the quite.
Along one stretch we heard a train to our right. As the train approached I looked over to see the engineer looking over at me. He gave a double toot. This gave me the biggest smile… way bigger then I would have ever thought. There I was riding a bicycle along a train as they signaled me! The little boy some where sill inside me could not have been more pleased. Bikes and trains! The only thing missing from the boy’s toy’s turned man could have been a truck or something. It was a childish joy from deep in my youth I didn’t even know I had.
As we crested a hill there was a very dark cloud ahead. There was a drop or two but it felt like the rain wasn’t going to happen. But as we approached it looked as if there was more rain ahead. It was strange, there was a slight drizzle under the dark cloud and then just ahead, in the clear blue sky was heavy rain. Suddenly there was a down pour. We stopped, grabbed some rain gear and continued. Just as soon as it came on, the rain disappeared like it never happened. Outside of the rubble strips filled with water for the next mile or two.
But soon enough we were checking into the motel. Dinner in the attached lobby and right to the room… I must hit the bike shop tomorrow before my cracked rim gets any worse and the only bike shop in 100 miles, outside of the one we just went to, closes at 4 tomorrow! It’s only 60 miles away, but that doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room for the mornings ride.

Going on 4 weeks…WOW!
Keep pushing onwards, and the Rockies, will be upwards!
Do you both intend to continue the journey across the Lower 48?
Or perhaps you’ll go North again across what we Italians call the…UPPER U ASS!.
