- Retrospective
We both woke up before the alarm. I didn’t know Jerry had woken up as well so I laid there worrying I didn’t set the alarm. Finally I got up to take a pee, of course I spent the entire time in the bathroom terrified the alarm was going to go off. I laid down just in time for the alarm. Jerry sprung up, as I later found out, waiting for the alarm as well.
At breakfast Jerry read an article about which foods to, and not to eat in the summer months. Who knew artichoke was to be avoided to prevent dehydration in hot summer days? There was an additional section talking about working out in winter months to help your body work harder, in a good way, is the best way to get your summer body. The thing about ice cream actually making you warmer I actually knew about. It was kind of an interesting article, even if I was only hearing highlights.
This hotel had a water slide as well. I’m starting to think these hotels in the middle just put these kinds of attractions in to give people a reason to come. I mean if I lived out here and it was February I might want to go to a hotel a few towns down just for some warm water fun. Though I wonder how well they have these attractions heated.
Just before we went back to the room two different families came down for breakfast. Felt little early for kids that age, but I actually have no idea. They never actually said it, but I got the feeling that the only reason either of these families were in this hotel was the water slide and pool. I guess it works.
We finished getting ready and headed for the door. I have just accepted that wind is going to be a thing for… well probably till we get over the Rocky’s. I mean until it is actually too much it is just wind we’ll have to push through. However, I was not expecting a dark cloudy 59 degrees on August 1st. Happy summer! As soon as we step out side I wonder what hell this must be to live in in February.
Jerry got his gear on. I went back and fourth if I should put on my jumper. It was cold, but would I be sweating in five minutes? Also, didn’t that article just say that cold weather workouts were good hard for your body? Not that the point of this ride is a workout, but would that be so bad?
The next 5 miles I questioned if I had made a mistake. It was cold. But then we stopped for a pee and I saw it had been 15 miles already, and I wasn’t really that cold.
I don’t know if we had two easy days, or knowing today was going to be longer, or the weather… what ever it was the miles flew.
That is until mile 30 or so we found another stretch of taint shiatsu. I was so pleased with the day so far, I hope this wasn’t the beginning of a long end to the day. We trudged through the stony shoulder. I hoped this would not be a long stretch but what can you do? Luckily the stony shoulder wasn’t too long.
Right back to the miles flying by. It was a great feeling. Or more accurately, no feeling. The road just passed and passed. Kilometer markers flew by as we made our way along the highway.
We stopped for some water / just be out of the saddle for a minute. We pulled into one of the very few gas stations we saw today. We weren’t really looking to buy anything so when we saw they were closed we just parked out front and stretched a minute. It was kind of funny how many people came to this gas station in the short time we were there. First a woman, parked at the pump and walked up to the door before she saw the sign. Then she drove away, instead of going to the new gas station across the street. Then two guys, working for the pipeline or some other kind of big petrol company. The passenger made it all the way to pulling the door before noticing the closed sign. They however went across the street to the new gas station. Lastly a guy came to park right between Jerry and I. There wasn’t many better parking spots but really right here? Especially when they’re closed! But yes I know, the last two people didn’t notice, why would he? He stubbled out of the car, enough that I questioned if he was sober or not. I said they’re closed. He said that’s no good for me, but I guess it’s not good for you either. We said there’s a place across the street.
I read this morning, “I watched my dog chase his tail for like 10 minutes and thought gosh, he’s easily amused. Then I realized I just watched my dog chase it’s tail for 10 minutes.” And here I stand watching people pull up to a gas station.
The clouds left one by through out the day, till by the time we were getting close to our destination the sky was almost blue. It started cold and dark, but by the end it was warm and sunny. The day was just lovely.
The road was so easy today, even if it was the highest mile day of this trip, we still felt ready to go to a better hotel then the first one. In fact, we rode past the second one too, looking at it from the parking lot. We stopped to look at the map and just from the hotel names we knew we were about to ride to the nicer part of town.
In the end, the most miles to date, and we were still in a reasonable rated hotel, in the nicer part of town, before 4:30. It was a good feeling to have had a bigger day and still have rocked it. Of course tomorrow options are 150 miles or 65… I don’t think tomorrow will beat todays… But we’ll see what the road has to say.
