I was out last night! I think I was more tired then I wanted to admit. When the alarm went off Jerry went for a shower and I rolled over for a snooze. I woke up hearing Jerry getting out of the bathroom. I sprung up to get dressed, I hate making others wait for me. We headed to breakfast.
More of the same. It is kind of nice that we can size up and choose before we’re even fully in the room. I waited while a man flipped, re-flipped and turned the waffle maker. I had a sneaking suspicion that this was not going to go well. After he sat down I headed over. He ran over to explain what to do, but quickly watched my technique. Shorty after I sat down he got up to through away the remains of his first attempt and went for round two. I guess he hasn’t made a waffle 9 out of 10 mornings for the last 37 days.
We got on the road happy to be not only revitalized but knowing that today would not be a big day. There were some hills and little wind but we felt strong and ready. We also knew that we had to make a quick business stop in the big town halfway through our day. It was kind of nice to know there was a built in break at almost exactly half way.
I waited outside snacking on a little treat we just picked up… Strawberries. After that article on summer foods I’d been thinking about their name for strawberries… Water bombs! I had been reluctant to buy any because they are not know for their travel-ability. But knowing we had this built in break… I enjoyed a shady place to stand and a nice fruit snack. There was good people watching. There was a college, farm land outside of town, and even a small downtown area. It kind of had rural, suburb and city live all inside this small area. There were cowboys (like real guys with spurs and might have lassoed a horse that morning), college kids (hanging out at the pot shop talking philosophy, I’m sure) and even a soccer mom pushing a stroller.
The map showed a fairly easy route back to Route 3. Left, right, a short jug handle and we’ll go right onto Route 3. It looked super easy. We made the first few turns, easy enough. As we approached the jug handle the road looked much more substantial then what we had been on. We made the jug handle and headed toward Route 3. Once we got on Route 3 it was a large down hill with merging traffic, to a curve to a second drop with exits, to a level off to a climb. There was lots of traffic, hills, exits and of course all of the normal gravel, uneven road and what ever else might be on the side of the road. Just two days ago we got on Route 3, a sleepy two lane street running along side the airport. Now heavy trucks speeding up and down the hills turning on and off the Route. Thankfully we made it though this section unscathed, but it was the most ducking and dodging as of yet.
Just as quick as it came, the heavy motion ended, back to hills and gentile turns. Though it does look like the land is changing, hills are bigger, the mountains are getting closer. This is the physical manifestation of our thoughts on riding to a destination, seeing, feeling the very ground beneath us changing till we’re in a hole new place.
We past more farms still questioning what these fields might hold. As we came to one farm, there was a large sign stating: What’s in the field? Sugar Beets. Learn more at Whatsinthefield.ca . Wow! It was like they knew we had been talking about this for days. I even felt a bit better about myself, in that if they’ve made an entire website to tell people what is in these fields then we are not the only people who don’t know.
We continued down Route 3. The hills were bigger, not that there were that many more hills but when they came they were much taller then just a few days ago. But a few turns, a few climbs and before we knew it we were pulling into town. We rode around a bit looking at our hotel options. I really wanted DJ Hotel to work for us… but it didn’t even look open, let alone a place we wanted to stay. We found the hotel that looked to be our spot. None of them had breakfast so it was really just the vibe from the road. Kind of humorous to find a “Broke Back Mountian” poster attached to the exterior of the office wall. I questioned if this was the gay friendly hotel in town, or they just liked the movie. Inside the hotel they had many more signed movie memorabilia then I would have ever expected, including many from Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. Was the movie filmed around here, and the cast and crew came into town?
It is early, there’s a wine store across the street and a pizza place that delivers. Today was a good day.
