- Retrospective
I went to the office to check out the continental breakfast. Kids cereal, coffee and bread with a toaster. We’re gonna need better then this. I look at the map and see a place up the road that might have a slightly better breakfast. We headed down the street. It was kind of nice to have an even more intimate view of the town. There were historic buildings and adds for the heritage sights in the area. A block or two down and we came across a cafe. They had breakfast… in fact they told us how they are the only place in town that does breakfast. No pancakes or waffles but some really nice scrambled eggs. I did learn my lesson, and asked for extra eggS instead of meat. Not sure how many eggs I got, but it was a large breakfast.
After breakfast we headed back to the hotel to finish getting ready. The news got us talking about stocks and big business. This topic would keep us talking through check out, and into at least the first 10 miles.
There were many signs for Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. We have been talking about this since the first sign yesterday. It’s kind of a crazy way to hunt. I mean it makes a lot of sense, and it worked for more then a thousand years, it can’t be all bad. It is interesting to think about the different ways of hunting through out history. Someone using modern weapons might be able to take a shot from great distance. On one hand the argument could be made that bing so far away there is less need to hide yourself and stalk; but on the other hand making a shot from such a large distance isn’t something everyone can do. Like wise, creating a stampede from horse could be seen as relatively safe, however if nothing else this place is called Head Smashed In, not for the the Buffalo.
The farm lands faded away leading to a different farm, wind farm. We had seen wind farms before in Canada, but never this big. I am at ease that they are not moving, but very worried that there are so many of them… is this proof that at any moment the wind might blow through? As we ride ahead I have this feeling, almost like I’m sneaking, hoping it doesn’t pop off.
Another nicely spaced out stop, almost right in the middle of the day for a quick lunch.
As we come down a hill I can see a tree on the right. It is obvious that it is something. I mean obviously, it’s not nothing… but a motorcyclist pulls off as we get closer. A second is still there. Is he paying homage to this tree? I went to see the Yakusugi in Japan, and the Kauri in New Zealand. So it’s really not that strange to me to see someone sight seeing a tree, but I did not expect road side. As we approach I saw they had erected a sign explaining what the tree just ahead. We passed the Burmis Tree so fast I could hardly see it well, but it was still a nice sight. Sad, and impressed to learn the full story.
We proceed toward the Rockies. The hills no longer look like hills, these are mountains. We have arrived.
A few more climbs, turns and drops and we arrived at our town. We pulled into the first hotel. She said they did not have any rooms available, except for the hot tub room with one seen bed. We passed on that. She said there is a sister location, just down the road and she would call to see if they have a room. Moments later she said we would hold the room for us till we got there. However, the directions were go back to the last town… “Wait, are you guys going west?!?” Yes, we are the only two cyclist going west. Thankfully she told us about a non-affiliated hotel just west of here.
After check in we settled into our room and looked at the delivery menu. I ordered food for us: two pizzas and two salads. Chicken Caesar Salad for Jerry and a Greek Salad for me, no Greek Salad. OK, Garden Salad for me, no Garden Salad. OK, Caesar Salad, with no meat. OK, no meat on the second Caesar Salad, yes, no meat. When we get our food, my Caesar Salad is covered in bacon. I call, they say we thought you didn’t want chicken. I said I asked for a Greek or Garden salads you said there was none, so I said I would take a Caesar with no meat. We thought you didn’t want to add chicken. So that’s it? You can not do anything? I am sorry for there confusion. So I paid you for a salad with no meat and you gave me what you wanted and I’m just out of that money.
It was a fine day but I don’t understand why I need to beg not to have meat added to my salad.
