No breakfast at the motel so it was a quick getting ready to hit the road. Just about a mile down the road we found a dinner. We parked the bikes and I apparently set my GoPro to take about 900 photos of the inside of my helmet. I had an omelet while Jerry had the pancakes. We were on our way in no time.
We found a grocery store and stopped for some supplies. It was interesting just similar this store was to the last. I questioned if it was the same layout exactly or just a basic model. Either way it was very nice that since I had shopped one other time in this country I now knew where the Cliff bars were.
When I exited the store, we started packing our new food. As we worked a man approached us. He clearly spoke French as a first language, but he mustered out a question. ‘Where did you get this helmet?’ It had taken a second to get this far so I went for the simplest answer, ‘America’. He was disappointed that he couldn’t get the info he wanted. He then asked ‘America? To where?’ We told him Manhattan – Vancouver – Astoria. He said ‘I think you need to use our national heath care. You are crazy.’ We laughed and said our good byes. After he left Jerry and I joked about how most people call us crazy, he diagnosed us and called for treatment.
In the parking lot as we left we saw a bunch of kids smoking pot. We talked about how now it is legal, is it legal in a parking lot? A grocery store parking lot?
When we leave the parking lot the town has clearly just fixed the road by laying tar (or what ever) then topped with small pebbles. The entire Main Street was covered in lines of small pebbles. As we rode our bikes spat stones left, right, all over town. We wondered if these softens helped in the winter months or some other reason like this. The road leading out of town had a sudden hill up, at the top the pebbles ended and there was a brand new pristine black top. We excitedly pressed forward, only to find out it had no roll. We couldn’t figure if it was the material, or the newness of it, but we had to peddle even on the down hills. This new road was not all that it was cracked up to be.
Bruce Peninsula quickly became like the Hamptons. A nicer area, near the water, an odd mix of big money with nice houses and poorer families keeping the same bungalow in the family for generations. There wasn’t much to see, which was kind of nice that we just peddled and peddled.
Close to the end of the day we saw a lone rider with panniers. We approached from behind, noticing their stuffed moose bunged to the rear rack looking up. As we passed Jerry said ‘nice moose’. At which point we realized she was a young woman. We passed and continued down the road. A few miles later we paused and she caught up. She told us she is from France but riding from Montreal to Vancouver. Solo! We were very impressed. She told us about Warm Showers, she called it couch surfing for cyclists. Probably not my and Jerry’s speed. We spoke of her ride. Most people can’t believe my first tour was Manhattan to Miami, but I had Jerry. She is doubling what I did, solo! She had no toe connection. She’s riding across a contentment with no pull. Impressive or crazy?
We rode into Tobermory. I had found a motel that looked to be as close as possible and still affordable, so we headed there. On the the door to the office was a sign that said ‘Had to leave for an hour, be back at 7, sorry for the inconvenience, we had 1 queen room $X, 1 king $X’. In the parking lot I started looking for other options. I found a second motel, right across the street from the ferry, cheaper pice, and it had two beds! Super score.
The motel was nice enough, either way we’re our first thing in the morning. The restaurants around to town were all facing the bay and the prices reflected the views. Our dinner was nice enough but not really worth the price. After dinner we headed for the motel for an early night. The ferry leaves at 7 AM so it will be an early start tomorrow.
